Prior to the formation of the Grand Lodge of Florida, and according to the records of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, the first Lodge to be chartered in either of the two Florida Territories was Grant's East Florida Lodge #143, which was chartered on March 15, 1768 at St. Augustine.
On the same date the Grand Lodge of Scotland created the "Provincial Grand Lodge over the Lodges in the Southern District of North America". This Provincial Grand Lodge was located in St. Augustine as was Grant's East Florida Lodge #143.
